Specific Learning Differences

Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia

01

Before booking an assessment

  • Have an eye test to ensure that vision problems are not causing the learning difficulty.

  • Get your child's hearing tested if you have concerns about their hearing.

  • Complete 6 months of intervention targeting reading, writing, or maths. For example, Macqlit/Minilit, small group learning at school, tutoring, or speech pathology.

02

My child hasn't had 6 months of intervention

  • You will not be able to get a diagnosis.

  • An education assessment can still be completed to help you understand what intervention should be targeting.

  • You are welcome to book an assessment for 6 months time and complete intervention first. Appointments can be cancelled up to 24 hours before and you will be sent a reminder.

03

Which assessment should I book?

  • You will need to book two appointments.

       Appointment 1: Education Assessment.

       Appointment 2: Cognitive Assessment.

  • After the education assessment, if the results are not consistent with a Specific Learning Difference you will be given a choice whether or not to proceed with the cognitive assessment.

  • You are welcome to book only an education assessment and arrange the second time on the day of your appointment.

04

What does the assessment involve?

  • The assessment begins with a short interview regarding your learning history and experiences.

  • The first appointment will involve an education assessment which may include reading, writing, and/or maths depending on your needs.

  • We use a range of assessment tools to get a thorough understanding of your literacy and numeracy skills, including the WISC and WIAT.

  • Each appointment takes 1 - 2 hours and breaks can be provided if needed.

  • After the assessment you will be provided with a report summarising the results, providing identification of a Specific Learning Difference (if appropriate), and with tailored recommendations.

05

What ages do you assess?

  • We can assess children and adults.

  • Children can be assessed from 5 years old but should have completed Kindy and 6 months of intervention first.
