Assessment Centre
About
Hi I'm Kate!
I'm the psychologist behind the Illawarra Learning Assessment Centre. I started the centre after becoming fascinated by how people learn and my own journey as a neurodivergent woman and mother.

I feel very lucky to spend my days with people who are fun, playful, creative, and energetic. Getting to know my clients and helping them to better understand their strengths is so rewarding. There is nothing better than hearing someone tell me they love their brain!

My Experience

I've been working as a psychologist since 2010 and through my lived experience I have gained a deep understanding of the many strengths and positive characteristics neurodivergent people have. Before I started the Illawarra Learning Assessment Centre I worked in counselling roles, including as a school counsellor. Since 2020 I have focused my work on learning differences, ADHD, and Autism.

My Approach

My goal with all of my clients it make sure they feel seen, understood, supported, and valued. I do this by making sure I use affirming language during our conversations, so that even when we are discussing challenges the focus is on describing what you experience without blame or judgement.
When I'm administering assessments, I try to make sure that people (particularly children) have an environment that meets their needs, whether that means a quiet place, time to have a chat, or breaks for play. I often tell kids who come to see me that I have a strict "no torture" policy in my office! Even if we're doing hard things it's important to me that people leave feeling good.

My Interests

When I'm not at work I'm busy with my own vibrant and energetic family. I'm a person who is most comfortable being busy, so naturally I collect hobbies. I love spending time near the beach (swimming in summer and walking when the water is too cold), bush walking, camping, listening to music, playing the piano, gardening, and knitting.
